AI words, in plain language.
Every episode adds a Word of the Week. If a term ever stops you in your tracks, it should be here.
- AI agent
- AI that can take actions on its own, like sending an email or booking a meeting, not just answer questions.
- AI governance
- The rules, people, and checks that decide how AI gets built and used, and who answers for it when something goes wrong.
- Artificial intelligence (AI)
- Software that does tasks we usually think need human judgment, like writing, recognizing images, or making recommendations.
- Bias
- When AI treats some groups unfairly, usually because the examples it learned from were unbalanced.
- Deepfake
- Fake audio, images, or video made with AI to look or sound like a real person.
- DisplacementWord of the Week, EP 01 ↗
- Losing a job because the work changed or went away, whether or not you find a new one soon. A bank teller whose branch closes and who starts at a credit union a month later was displaced, but only briefly out of work.
- Generative AI
- AI that creates new things, like text, images, audio, or video, instead of just sorting or labeling existing things.
- Hallucination
- When AI states something false with confidence, like a citation that does not exist. It is guessing, not lying, but the result can still mislead you.
- Human in the loop
- A setup where a person reviews or approves what the AI suggests before it takes effect.
- Large language model
- The kind of AI behind chatbots. It has read huge amounts of text and predicts what words should come next, which lets it write and answer questions.
- Machine learning
- A way of building AI where the software learns patterns from lots of examples instead of following hand written rules.
- Risk assessment
- A structured look at what could go wrong with an AI system, how likely it is, and how bad it would be.
- Transparency
- Being open about when AI is used and how it reaches its outputs, so people can question it.
